English as an Additional Language (EAL)
At Budapest British International Academy, we are proud to be a truly international school, with over 50 nationalities represented across our community. Each year, students join us from all over the world—often at different points in the academic year—and many arrive with little or no English.
Supporting these learners is central to our mission, which is why we place great importance on delivering a strong, inclusive, and effective EAL programme.
A Supportive Start for Every Learner
Our EAL programme is designed to ensure that students with limited English are able to access the curriculum, integrate confidently into school life, and make rapid progress.
Inclusive Environment
From their first day, students are immersed in English in a nurturing and structured environment that values their home language and cultural background.
Confident Integration
Learners are supported to integrate socially and academically, helping them feel secure, welcomed, and confident.
Targeted EAL Support
Students who need language support receive additional, timetabled EAL lessons alongside their mainstream classes. These sessions focus on:
Language Development
- Developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills
- Building academic vocabulary across subjects
Classroom Confidence
- Supporting classroom language and task comprehension
- Boosting confidence in communication and participation
This targeted support enables students to develop English more quickly while continuing to learn alongside their peers.
Immersion with Individualised Guidance
While immersion in an English-speaking environment is key to language acquisition, we recognise that every learner’s journey is different.
Tailored Support
Our experienced EAL specialists tailor support to each student’s level, ensuring they are challenged appropriately.
Progress at Every Stage
Learners are supported at every stage of their language development journey.
Ongoing Progress and Integration
As students’ English improves, EAL support is adapted and gradually reduced, allowing learners to become increasingly independent and fully confident in the classroom.
Adaptive Support
Continuous assessment ensures that EAL provision evolves in line with each student’s progress.
Whole-School Collaboration
Close collaboration between EAL teachers and subject teachers ensures support remains effective.
